A: Since single-phase power cannot generate a rotating magnetic field and there is no starting torque, it is usually necessary to add an additional winding called a starting winding. A suitable capacitor is connected in series in the starting winding so that the phase of the starting winding is 90° out of phase with the main winding. This capacitor is also known as the startup capacitor. This allows a rotating magnetic field to start the motor at start-up.
